Scout Mountain Bluegrass is a five-piece traditional bluegrass band from Powell River’s Sunshine Coast, bringing together experienced musicians, tight vocal harmonies, acoustic instrumentation and an eclectic mix of song, old and new.
The band has been part of the British Columbia bluegrass and roots music community since 2009, with a strong connection to the traditional sound and spirit of bluegrass.
Scout Mountain’s performances combine strong musicianship, energetic instrumental breaks, vocal harmonies and the warmth and personality of a live acoustic string band.
At the centre of the band’s presentation is a classic bluegrass tradition that has become increasingly rare on modern stages:

THE ONE-MICROPHONE EXPERIENCE
Scout Mountain embraces the traditional one-microphone performance style associated with the early days of bluegrass. Rather than placing an individual microphone in front of every musician, the band gathers around one central vocal microphone and moves naturally as the music develops.
Lead singers step forward, harmony singers move in, instrumentalists step up for their breaks. The musicians then move back into the ensemble, everyone is listening and responding to one another in real time. This creates a performance that is both musically dynamic and visually engaging.
The one-microphone approach becomes part of the show itself, allowing the audience to see the communication between the musicians and experience the give-and-take that makes bluegrass so unique. Scout Mountain uses its “Louise” microphone from Ear Trumpet Labs as the centrepiece of this performance style, adapting the amplification setup to suit the venue.
